Sportsmen Scuttlebutt |
January 2017
With a full Moon, and
the Earth at perihelion (closest approach to the sun), and lots of lots
of
good old fashioned rain, this is what we got! This is not the first time
we've seen this level of high water, but it is the first time in a long
time. |
Along with the rain and tides came the high winds.
Thanks to Martin Wibbenhorst for this photo.
December 2016
Dan Gorman is the winner of the Sportsmen's 2016 Texas Hold-Em
poker tournament completed in December. The award was presented by PC
Don Wilson. (You may remember Dan; he's the guy who shot the ACE at the Sportsmen golf tournament in 2015.) |

Chillin’ at the Stockton Yacht Clubunder stars so clear and bright. The water is as smooth as glass. It’s an extraordinary night.
New species of birds aboundif you will take the time to look. Arrive early so you’ll have extra time To fool around or read a book.
Then all the boats start to come, one right after another. Excitement and fun fill the air. 4S is an event like no other.
Friends you met a year ago drop by your boat to talk. (That is, if you’re not a mile away down on the diversion dock!)
Lots of laughter and great food – an evening of dancing to come. Then the competition begins and everyone has fun.
Some of us will play cribbage. There’s horseshoes and casting, too. Pinochle, scrabble – the list goes on – There’s so very much to do!
After all the games are complete and the tally has been done – Bronze, silver and gold medals counted. Now, which yacht club has won?
It doesn’t really matter at all. If you lose, have no fear. All the partying and the games will start anew next year!

Jane Parsons, Antioch Citizen
of the Year for 2015
Jane
Parsons joined Sportsmen YC in 2005. In October 2008, she became our
newest PICYA Delegate. At that time, this is what I wrote: “A more
gracious or well-known lady in the local and yachting community would be
hard, if not impossible, to find. An Antioch resident for many years,
Jane retired as Antioch’s City Treasurer after 21 years of service. She
is a Past Commodore of Driftwood YC and Past President of the
Soroptimist International of Antioch. Currently, Jane is serving as
Antioch’s Chamber of Commerce Ambassador and is a committee member of
Holiday De-Lites.” A recent article in the
Contra Costa Times
honored Jane as a 2015 Citizen of the Year for Lifetime Achievement.
She is now the longest serving member of the Antioch Chamber’s
Ambassadors, supporting Chamber mixers, ribbon cuttings, and more. To
quote Diane Gibson Gray, Antioch School Trustee and Director of the Arts
and Cultural Foundation, “She is one of those rare individuals who
serves quietly and always has a smile and wonderful attitude.” |

An ACE at the 11th hole...
During
the 2015 Annual Sportsmen Golf Tournament at Lone Tree Golf Course, Dan
Gorman shot an ACE on the 11th hole. Dan mentioned that this was his
second lifetime Hole-in-One. It is also the first hole-in-one shot at a
Sportsmen Golf Tournament. Duly impressed, we commented that he must have been golfing for a long time. He replied no, he had only been golfing for about two years. WOW, how many amateur golfers EVER shoot a hole-in-one, let alone two in the first two years? Congratulations Dan! (Maybe we'll see him on the PGA Tour soon - watch out Tiger.) April 28, 2016 Follow-up: The 2016 Sportsmen tournament has now been played. Alas, there were no Aces shot this year. The winning 4some was Neal Essary, Kenny Norton, Rudy Trautner and Tony Siino. Congratulations! |
